What is Holos?

Holos is a suite of tools that empowers you create, discover, and share immersive learning experiences, giving you a new way to teach that improves learning outcomes by fostering higher engagement and retention.

Who created Holos?

Holos started out as a project by founders Dan Borkhus and Tyler Waite at the of Wisconsin-Madison in 2016. Everyone on the current team is multidisciplinary, and takes a holistic and humanistic approach to developing software.

What media types are supported within Holos?

Holos supports the importing and manipulation of text, images, video, audio, and 3D objects. Please refer to our Cards page for specific file-types and additional details.

What if I don't want to create my own immersive learning experience from scratch?

While we're trying to make it as easy as possible to author immersive learning experiences, we understand that you don't always want to re-invent the wheel. To that end, we're developing the Holos Library, a place where you can share and discover learning experiences authored in Holos and immediately pull them into your clasoom.

How much does Holos cost?

We take an all-inclusive approach where you pay one fee annually per school. Please refer to our Pricing page for more information.

How do I use Holos in my classroom?

We are creating our tools to be as user-friendly and flexible as possible so that you have the freedom add virtual experiences to your existing lesson plans, but feel free to contact us at for additional questions surrounding setup and integration.

I can't afford to have a classroom set of VR headsets. What can I do?

We are very cognizant of the hardware costs involved that lie in adopting software like ours. To that end, we have developed a "bring what you can" model where you would only need one VR headset and can have everyone else join into the experience with iPads. Read more about it here.

What devices work with Holos?

Currently, Holos runs on desktop VR headsets under the OpenVR runtime. This includes the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, as well as Windows Mixed Reality Headsets. We use the Leap Motion add-on to empower you to use Holos with only your hands. The AR Window app runs on the iPad (March 2018 or newer).

Is Holos COPPA-compliant?

Yes. Protecting user data, and especially data from children, is core to our mission. We closely follow COPPA best practices according to the FTC. For this reason, we require parental consent before granting access to our app.

Is data from the app used for any other purpose, like advertising?

No. Any data that we collect is strictly used for us to gain insights on how people are using Holos in an effort to make a better experience for all.
